Barrier Packaging

Different materials vary in their ability to limit passage of gases, liquids, and solids. Metals and glass (without any pinholes) are impermeable to everything, while paper is permeable to almost everything. Due to their nonpolar molecular structure, polyolefins have a very low water permeability but are readily permeable to gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide and to hydrocarbons.
